Duties and Responsibilities


The Academic Advisor, Office of First and Second Year Advising, provides holistic academic advising for a caseload of first- and second-year undergraduate Students on major discernment, course selection, requirements for selected areas of concentration, and a wide range of student academic and development issues to support student success and timely progress toward graduation. The Academic Advisor:

  • Assists Students in developing meaningful academic and co-curricular plans within the Jesuit tradition.
  • Presents academic workshops on various topics, such as Registration, Campus Resources, Software Usage, Degree Requirements, and Learning Strategies.
  • Advises students in person, as well as via phone, e-mail, and video-conferencing through scheduled and drop-in appointments.
  • Facilitates section(s) of the First-Year Seminar.
  • Maintains accurate records using various software.
  • Develops advising resources promoting student success and retention in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Communicates Degree requirements, academic and other policies (including FERPA) to Students, Parents, and Faculty.
  • Assists incoming First-Year and Transfer Students through orientation programming.
  • Provides additional support to Students in academic distress or on academic probation in accordance with academic policies; refers Students needing additional support to appropriate campus offices and resources.
  • Prepares student files for seamless transition to College and School advisors at the conclusion of students' sophomore year.
  • May work prominently but not exclusively with special student populations (e.g., Honors Students, International Students, Rome Start Students, ESL Students) and liaise with University-partner offices in supporting student populations (e.g., Rome Center, Global and Community Engagement).
  • Participates in Student Academic Services signature programs, events, and activities, including but not limited to: Orientation, New Student Convocation, finals week proctoring, and Undergraduate Admission open houses.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Minimum Education and/or Work Experience


Bachelor's Degree required with 1-2 years of related experience, Master's Degree preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and one-to-two years of related experience; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Experience working in an education or Higher Education setting with direct student interactions.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team of committed Academic Advisors and Student Affairs professionals.
  • Ability to help Students develop an appreciation for and understanding of the Jesuit approach to education and the Core curriculum.
  • Must be able to work some evening and weekend hours in a fast-paced environment.
