What is the Role?

The Finance Team at Coney Island Prep (CIP) is the backbone that supports our entire community from scholars and their families to teachers and operational school leaders. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) brings strong attention to detail, a deep commitment to building and maintaining effective systems, and a track record of implementing innovative and efficient financial practices. The CFO drives continuous improvement, aligns every financial decision with our mission, and ensures CIP stays at the forefront of best financial practices. The CFO will serve on the schools network leadership team, partner with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and strategize across departments to mitigate risk, ensure compliance, and develop and implement policies that meet CIPs financial objectives. Responsibilities include presenting to the Board of Trustees, training operations staff on fiscal policies, and overseeing an annual operating budget of over $35 million. The CFO is based in our network office in Coney Island, Brooklyn, with flexibility to work from home two days a week after onboarding is complete. The CFO reports directly to the CEO.

What Youll Be Asked To Do

Operate with Effectiveness

  • Balance 60% tactical and 40% strategic work; provide strategic recommendations to the CEO based on financial analysis, cost identification, and revenue/expense analysis.
  • Act as the point of contact for audits and coordinate all audit activities.
  • Oversee long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with CIPs strategic plan.
  • Manage accounting, finances, and audits for the Friends of organization and present operational metrics internally and externally.
  • Review and improve formal finance-related procedures and administer new systems for efficiency.
  • Identify technological opportunities, including AI, to streamline processes.
  • Oversee preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials for funding organizations and CIPs board of directors.

Collaborate and Colead

  • Partner with the CEO to manage CIP's leases and contracts on school buildings and the network office.
  • Work with the People Team on payroll, benefits negotiations, and competitive compensation packages.
  • Collaborate with the COO and Operations Team to manage campus budgets with a scholar-focused financial decision-making approach.
  • Partner with CSO and CAO on curriculum purchasing, professional development, and afterschool programming.
  • Support fundraising goals across the organization while maintaining fiscal policy compliance.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Compliance and Student Services on compliance deadlines.
  • Build stakeholder relationships and lead with a people orientation.
  • Participate in strategic planning as a senior leadership team member.
  • Engage the board finance committee on operating model and delivery changes.

Deliver Exceptional Results

  • Manage cash flow and forecasting; maximize interest on cash reserves and continually improve cash management strategy.
  • Oversee all financial and departmental accounting.
  • Work with commercial insurance broker to ensure compliance and manage claims and renewal processes.
  • Review event contracts for risk and insurance coverage.
  • Administer CIPs 403(b) plan.
  • Research and recommend fiscal policy improvements, manage implementation.

Develop Talent

  • Develop and manage one Director of Finance and two Finance Managers; guide multidisciplinary teams across departments.
  • Ensure finance staff records adhere to GAAP and monitor fund usage.
  • Lead professional development presentations for stakeholders.
  • Facilitate crossdepartment collaboration to support CIPs strategy and operational delivery.

What Youll Need

  • Passion for education and dedication to Coney Island Preps mission.
  • Bachelors degree and at least 10 years of broad financial experience, ideally in accounting and actionable recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Nonprofit and/or K12 leadership experience preferred.
  • Selfreflective, open to feedback, and eager to grow.
  • Exceptional time management, project management, and detail orientation.
  • Strong data analysis and presentation skills.
  • Problemsolving and coaching abilities.
  • Changemanagement, influence, and decisionmaking facilitation skills.
  • Highly developed people skills; experience managing at least one direct report.

  • Excellent oral and written communication.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Concur (or similar), Excel, Google Workspace, and learning new technology.
