The Department of Theatre and Drama seeks candidates for an open-rank appointment as Professor, Associate Professor, or Assistant Professor of Directing/Acting to begin August 2025. Candidates should have earned a terminal degree, MFA or PHD in theatre or closely related field, with an emphasis in directing and/or performance, and professional directing and/or performance experience, and at least two years of university level teaching experience.
This position carries a 2/2 course load and will (a) teach directing, acting, and other performance classes, as well as text analysis, with potential for courses in other areas of expertise; (b) teach the directorial process in production; (c) direct on the mainstage or a workshop. We seek colleagues who are highly collaborative and collegial, who have a demonstrated record of positive student advising and mentoring practices, and who strongly exhibit dedication to advancing educational opportunity and equity in theatre, and in higher education generally. An offer at the Associate or Full Professor rank at UW-Madison requires full tenure review at the Department, University, and UW System levels before starting this position.- Support programs in Theatre and Drama by designing new courses and teaching existing courses in directing, acting, and related areas.
- Maintain a program of nationally recognized creative activity in acting and directing and/or related research and scholarship.
- Successfully secure external funding or opportunities to support research and education for students.
- Advise and mentor students.
- Direct regularly for University Theatre.
- Participate in shared governance and other committee activities.
- Contribute professionally at local, state, national, and (if possible) international levels.

Part of the vibrant arts community at UW Madison that includes departments of Dance and Fine Arts in the School of Education, the Department of Theatre and Drama (T&D) offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Theatre, with a named option in Acting, along with a certificate in Theatre. A faculty of eight work in close collaboration with eight instructional academic staff, and the department is supported by an administrative team of four and four teaching specialists working in the production shops. The department engages PhD candidates in Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies (ITS) programs as Teaching Assistants and Project Assistants.
University Theatre (UT) produces several performances a year in two theatre spaces supported by scenic, prop, and costume shops, and lighting and sound labs. Theatre students develop skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creative competencies which prepare them for successful careers in the theatre and entertainment industry, graduate studies, as well as education, business, law, and other fields. We approach theatre as a laboratory to explore humanity and shape the world, providing a welcoming environment that fosters risk-taking and growth in research, interdisciplinary inquiry, and community engagement and that promotes the expansive goals of the Wisconsin Idea ().
