Job Description

UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join our Labor & Delivery unit!

This position is part-time, rotating evenings and nights. Occasional weekend and holiday coverage required.  Flexible scheduling as shifts range from 3p-11p, 7p-7a, and 11p-7a

Overview : The Patient Care Technician plays a dual role in supporting the Labor and Delivery  and OB Triage unit. They function as a Unit Secretary; they manage administrative tasks such as answering phones, coordinating patient flow, scheduling patients, and creating new charts. As a Patient Care Technician, they assist with some patient care, stocking, specimen labeling, and room preparation. This combined role helps maintain efficiency, supports clinical staff, and enhances the overall patient experience during labor and delivery.

Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience. 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist patients with procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies
  • Report patient status changes and provide feedback to RN
  • Perform core nursing assistant tasks: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I\&O, specimen collection, Foley care
  • Complete at least four advanced tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal
  • Report equipment malfunctions; maintain communication with departments
  • Respond to call lights, phones, pass meal trays, and transport patients
  • Accept feedback, identify learning needs, and improve skills
  • Provide patient/family instruction under RN direction
  • Apply, monitor, and remove restraints per protocol
  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team; respect cultural diversity and workplace safety
  • Maintain professional relationships and demonstrate accountability and enthusiasm
  • Adhere to all patient care policies, safety standards, and infection control procedures
  • Suggest and support departmental changes and quality initiatives
  • Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
  • Routinely perform ADLs plus point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, and patient transport
  • Achieve competency in advanced skills as needed: phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, NG tube clamping/removal
  • Limit medication access to distribution to nurses
