POSITION SUMMARY Police Officer The purpose of this position is to fulfill the mission and specific purpose of this department through the prevention of crimes, traffic control, assist victims of violent crimes, apprehend criminals, and enforce state laws and local ordinances. Issues citations, participates in and conducts a variety of criminal investigations, makes arrests, and provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and law enforcement programs to ensure the safety and security of City streets, buildings, residences, and neighborhoods. Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS - Responds to 911 calls for service by acknowledging the dispatch; assessing the response priority; driving to the location; contacting victim, complainants, and witnesses; gathering information to determine if a crime has been committed; requesting additional resources if needed; arresting subjects if appropriate; and completing initial reports
- Performs self-initiated patrol activities by actively looking for violations of state statutes, traffic laws, and City ordinances; enforcing traffic laws through traffic stops; contacting residents and business owners to identify quality of life issues; following up with citizens about prior complaints; conducting property checks; serving subpoenas and warrants; and making referrals to the appropriate City or County agency when appropriate
- Conducts preliminary basic investigations by responding to incident locations; determining the type of incident; locating and identifying complainants, victims, and witnesses; identifying possible suspects; recording information; collecting and submitting evidence; completing the incident report; and obtaining warrants for suspects
- Conducts traffic accident investigations by responding to the accident location; checking for injuries; clearing the roadway; interviewing involved parties and witnesses; completing reports; issuing traffic citations; following up with any injured parties at the medical facility; and securing the scene if required
- Appears in Court by complying with scheduled court dates; answering subpoenas to appear on days other than regularly scheduled dates; reviewing reports and notes; testifying; discussing the case with the District Attorney and Defense Attorney as appropriate; and assisting in contacting witnesses and serving subpoenas
- Serve as liaison and promotes good community relations public relations establishing and preserving good relationships with the public
- Participate in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills, including firearms proficiency, defensive driving skills, apprehension, and arrest techniques, investigative skills, and general law enforcement skills
- Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and report for duty regularly and timely to attend/fulfill said shifts. Ability to report to shift assignment on short notice at any hour of the day or night

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Citizen of the United States
- Twenty-one (21) years of age or older upon appointment
- At least 12 hours of college credit from a regionally accredited college or university with a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average or higher
OR - Twenty-four (24) months of active duty military service with an honorable discharge;
OR - Two (2) years of service as a sworn peace officer
- Experience or training in personal computer use with Microsoft Office software
LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS - Active Basic Peace Officer License from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) at the time of appointment

- Criminal background check including, but not limited to job history, education, criminal history, and driving record
