Job Description

Job Title: Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant Wage/Hour Status: Exempt


Reports to: Director of Special Services


Dept./School: Assigned Campus(es) Date Revised: 07/08/2025

Primary Purpose:


Provide speech-language pathology services to students as directed by a supervising Speech-Language Pathologist licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations, Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology division.


Qualifications:

Education/Certification:


Bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology from an accredited college or university


Valid Speech-Language Pathologist - Assistant Texas License granted by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology division

Special Knowledge/Skills:


Knowledge of Habilitation and rehabilitation of speech, language, and hearing disorders


Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal skills


Ability to travel to multiple work locations as assigned

Experience:


Minimum of 50 hours observation and direct clinical service as directed by the Assistant's License requirements


One year as SLP-Assistant in a school district preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Therapy


1. Provide appropriate individual and group therapy to students consistent with speech and language goals contained in Individual Education Plans (IEP).

  1. Follow session plans developed by the SLP.
  1. Collaboration with all special education and general education teachers for each student receiving speech therapy services for the purposes of scheduling, monitoring progress and students' communication ability in the classroom

Evaluation


4. Provide information about progress to SLP to assist in determining level of progress.
  1. Screen students at teacher/campus request to determine possible referral needs through consultation with SLP
  1. Assist with gathering information for SLP to complete evaluations
Consultation


7. Counsel and involve parents in remedial process.
  1. Collaborate with SLP and classroom teachers to implement classroom activities to improve communication skills of students.
  1. Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents regarding the needs of the student.

Student Management


10. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  1. Establish control and administer discipline according to the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
  1. Billing - complete eSHARS session documentation for SLSP approval in order for the district to obtain reimbursement for services AND assist with obtaining Medicaid consents so that this billing may be completed

13. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy.
  1. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  1. Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.
  1. Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
  1. Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
  1. Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  1. Behavior goal implementation/data tracking for Speech Impairment (only eligibility) students with FBA and recommended goals

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals


Posture: Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting


Motion: Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension


Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heaving lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting nonambulatory students


Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; may require districtwide travel


Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure
