SUMMARY

Under the Direction of the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts, the Theatre Mentor will play a pivotal role in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where participants can explore and develop their theatrical talents. This role involves mentoring individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities through various aspects of theatre production, including acting, script reading, stage presence, and overall performance skills. The Theatre Mentor will also be responsible for tailoring activities to meet the unique needs of each participant, ensuring a positive and enriching experience for all.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Utilize appropriate methods for working with individuals with intellectual and or physical disabilities.
  2. Report suspected Abuse, Neglect, Exploitation, Isolation, and Abandonment (ANEIA) immediately as mandated by state law.
  3. Provide personalized mentoring and coaching to participants in all aspects of theatre arts.
  4. Develop and implement inclusive theatre workshops and classes tailored to the abilities and interests of participants.
  5. Assist participants in building confidence, self-expression, and social skills through theatrical activities.
  6. Collaborate with the Supervisor of Fine and Performing Arts to design and adapt theatre programs that are accessible and engaging.
  7. Create and modify scripts, activities, and performance pieces to suit the diverse needs of participants.
  8. Stay updated with best practices in inclusive theatre and apply them to program development.
  9. Guide participants through rehearsals and performances, providing constructive feedback and encouragement.
  10. Assist in organizing and executing theatre productions, ensuring participants are well-prepared and supported.
  11. Coordinate with other team members, volunteers, and external partners to ensure smooth production logistics.
  12. Foster a welcoming and inclusive community environment for participants, families, and caregivers.
  13. Maintain an inventory of all assigned equipment and supplies.
  14. Promote awareness and advocacy for including individuals with disabilities in the arts.
  15. Participate in community outreach events to promote the theatre program.
  16. May be assigned other duties as needed.

This position does not directly supervise others.

SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals, team members, and supervisors (verbal and written).
  • Must possess social perceptiveness to assess and understand other's reactions and behaviors.
  • Ability to empathize with the emotional and creative needs of participants, creating a nurturing and supportive environment that respects their individuality.
  • Skill in addressing challenges in theatre production and performance, creatively finding innovative solutions.
  • Knowledge of directing with a focus on inclusivity, ensuring that blocking, pacing, and performance adjustments are tailored to the abilities and comfort levels of participants.
  • Understanding of stagecraft, including set design, lighting, sound, costumes, and stage management, with the ability to modify these elements to be accessible and manageable for participants.
  • Ability to teach complex theatre concepts in a simplified, engaging manner that resonates with various learning styles, using repetition, visual aids, and hands-on activities to reinforce learning.
  • Ability to actively listen to participants, understand their concerns, goals, and preferences, and adjust teaching methods accordingly.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to assist participants with project challenges.
  • Ability to help participants develop and express their own artistic vision, guiding them towards creating work that is both personally meaningful and artistically fulfilling.
  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret instructions, gain knowledge, and have initiative.
  • Ability to resolve multiple complex issues simultaneously while remaining calm in stressful situations.
  • Must encompass professional demeanor.
  • Ability to successfully perform under critical deadlines.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Required: One (1) year of verifiable work experience as a Theatre Mentor or similar translatable experience preferably in an educational or community setting.
  • Required: Current CPR and First Aid Certification within 30 days of employment
  • Required: Current CPI certification within 30 days of employment
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Theatre or a similar discipline.
  • Preferred: Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES

  • Ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Able to perform tasks that require standing, walking, bending, and lifting for extended periods, particularly during set construction and rehearsals.
  • Comfortable working in environments with noise levels that range from moderate to loud, such as during rehearsals and performances.
  • Able to actively engage in teaching and mentoring students for approximately 80% of the day, with the remaining 20% dedicated to program planning and preparation.
  • Possesses the dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for tasks such as set design, and handling technical theatre equipment.
