Southminster Presbyterian Church, an inclusive and progressive congregation in Beaverton,

OR, is seeking a passionate, creative and adaptable Children’s Ministry Director . This part-time position has fluctuating hours but will average 8–10 hours per week throughout the year, plus more hours specifically across a one-week summer event and an end-of-summer family event. The Children’s Ministry Director is responsible for developing and implementing age-appropriate curriculum and programs for children kindergarten through grade 4, including Sunday school classes, summer church experiences, special events, and outreach initiatives. The position is also responsible for actively recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers to create a safe and welcoming environment for all children, aligning with the overall church mission and goals. The position requires strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills to effectively manage the children's ministry budget and ensure compliance with child safety policies. 

Key Responsibilities :

Foster Relationships: Create a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment where children feel valued and build meaningful friendships.

Develop and Deliver Lessons: Design and implement engaging, age-appropriate lessons that connect scripture to the lives of children.

Engage in Program Planning and Execution: Organize and manage children’s ministry calendar, including special events like holiday programs, family outreach initiatives and summer experiences. 

● Manage Volunteer Leadership: Recruit, train and oversee a team of volunteers to effectively lead children’s ministry activities.

● Ensure Child Safety: Ensure adherence to all child safety policies and procedures, including background checks, proper supervision, and reporting protocols.

Communicate Clearly and Effectively: Provide clear, consistent and frequent messaging to parents about events, activities and visioning for children’s ministry. Share responsibility with the Interim Youth Ministry Director for delivering general church announcements during worship on Sunday mornings.

Manage the Budget : Manage the children’s ministry budget, allocating funds for program materials, supplies and special events.

Collaborate with Church Leadership: Work closely with the Senior Pastor, the Youth Ministry Director and other church leaders to align children’s ministry goals with the overall church vision.

 

Qualifications :

Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, theology, counseling, social work, or a related field.

Background/Perspective: Basic familiarity with the Bible and supportive of progressive Christian theology. A history of participation in progressive faith communities is a major plus.

Experience: Proven experience working with children in the context of church ministry, social justice work, counseling, mentoring, or teaching, with a strong ability to connect authentically with children.

Leadership: A confident and compassionate leader who can engage children while effectively managing programs and events.

Organizational Skills: Strong ability to plan, coordinate, and execute activities, trips, and lessons.
